The movie is set in 1824, in the city of Rakhtghat, West Bengal, and gives the viewers a fight brewing between Manjulika/Mallika (Vidya Balan) and Anjulika/Mandira (Madhuri Dixit). Akshay Kumar’s duplicate Kartik Aaryan keeps duping people by referring to himself as a psychic medium or Rooh Baba. He is summoned for his help by the Royal Princess Meera (Triptii Dimrii), the daughter of the King of Rakhtghat, as her father believes the Palace is haunted.
Performances and Characters
Kartik Aaryan has done a fabulous job in the character of Rooh Baba. The way he portrayed the character had the charm and humor of the Akshay Kumar in the film. Vidya Balan and Madhuri Dixit, being veteran actresses, have given grace and depth to the film. But the humor in the film goes completely off the track at many places since most of the gags and jokes were not very effective.
The rest of the cast, Rajpal Yadav, Sanjay Mishra, and Vijay Raaz, was excellent with their flawless comedy timing, but the script disappoints them. It uses mostly low-hanging fruits for its humor. Also read: Mirzapur: The Film – A Journey into the Depths of Betrayal and Revenge
An Unbalanced Blend of Laughs and Frights
The movie has been directed by Anees Bazmee. It is a horror-comedy but with the balance of scales heavily in favor of the comedy part. The writing of the film is a massive disappointment. The movie rides its jump scares as a base plot but it is so predictable and does not carry much impact. The comedies were an element in previous films but in this movie, it feels forced and unnatural.
The film has the traditional “Ami Je Tomar” dance number with Vidya Balan and Madhuri Dixit looking dainty. Even that nostalgia fails to recreate the magic of the original Bhool Bhulaiyaa. Poor performances and a boring plot will always make it hard for this film to stand out at the box office.
Expectations vs. Reality
Despite its imperfections, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 is getting positive reactions in social media. People who watched the film were talking about their excitement and love on X. One wrote: “Yesss. This is gonna be a blockbuster of the year!!! #YeDiwaliBhoolBhulaiyaaVaali #BhoolBhulaiyaa3.” Another simply stated, “This movie is exactly what fans were hoping for! Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 is a spooky, funny treat. #BhoolBhulaiyaa3 #BhoolBhulaiyaa3Review.”
Still, it’s too little, too late because this film’s climax is more of a twist than a shocker. The token queer angle has been treated rather sensitively; it may help normalize discussions about same-sex relationships given the wide audience of this film, though. The attempt to bring horror and comedy together misses many marks in this narrative.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 is that kind of film that survives only by the power of nostalgia and star presence. The scariest moments are indeed quite predictable, while the writing does not come out impressive at any point in time. The flick can present cheap thrills on the festival occasions and not much beyond that. If one needs a film that could act as light relief, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 should do it. For franchise lovers, it might be wise to lower your expectations.
Overall, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 is an enjoyable watch if you’re in for some simple fun, but don’t expect it to recreate the magic of its predecessors.
