Conspicuously one of Tamil cinema’s most glamorous and iconic actresses, Nayanthara is now set to bare a very personal soul by way of her Netflix documentary “Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale” that arrives 18 November. Going into where no film about her has gone before, this is described as “an intimate look inside the life of the ‘Lady Superstar,'” that covers her path as a leading actress, her loves, her marriage to filmmaker Vignesh Shivan, and her journey through the movie business. However, the project was marred by a public feud between Nayanthara and Dhanush over the availability of footage shot in collaboration for their film “Naanum Rowdy Dhaan”. In what will later turn out to be one of the most daring honest posts to date, Nayanthara has vented out on Instagram with an open letter to Dhanush detailing her resentment and hurt because he wasn’t ready to give the permissions for the usage of songs, clips, and even photographs from the 2015 hit film. This is a personal and professional struggles she had to undergo for being an independent woman in the trade, years of painstaking efforts in making this documentary, and personal hurt she conceives toward Dhanush personal vendetta.

Nayanthara's Open Letter: A Call to Understand

In the letter, Nayanthara specifically reaches out to Dhanush, explaining how much her team has been disturbed by his refusal to permit the use of content from “Naanum Rowdy Dhaan”. She writes, “Cinema as we all know is a fight for survival for people like me: a self-made woman with no links in the industry and someone who had to struggle my way to the position I hold today.” She also says, “This documentary isn’t about me alone, but all of them who toiled day and night to get this documentary out there for everyone’s eyes.“. The absence of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in the documentary is a throbbing ache of this conflict because the film is special for Nayanthara. The director made repeated requests to use whatever could be sourced from the film for two years. Dhanush, one of the producers as well, refused access to any material from the film. The actress then comes back and describes how the pull-out decision for “Naanum Rowdy Dhaan” made her and the team reedit and change the content of the documentary since it was actually ready with cuts from the film.

According to her, it was a very strenuous process and the end product was definitely not something they had envisioned. Her exasperation seeps through every word as she talks about how the momentum of the project slowed, and how the emotional core of the documentary was affected by this refusal of Dhanush.

The Legal Notice: Adding Fuel to the Fire

Things became bitter when Dhanush issued Nayanthara a legal notice after the trailer of the documentary hit the shelves. The notice objected to the inclusion of mere three seconds of behind the shots-behind that were shot on personal devices and had already come out in public. The law affairs of Dhanush demanded ₹10 crores as damages for using those three seconds of footage of it, which Nayanthara calls an overacting and unwarranted move. Nayanthara’s open letter: “I still can’t believe this one. The legal notice issued by Dhanush is an all-time low for him. The full force of a man using his clout to get back at a woman because she didn’t please him.”. She writes, “I wish you were half the person you portray to be on stage in audio launches in front of your innocent fans but clearly, you do not practice what you preach.” Her words are sharp and laced with a sense of betrayal, reflecting her view that Dhanush’s public persona is at odds with his actions behind the scenes.

The Root of the Dispute: Ego and Grudges?

For Nayanthara, the crux of the matter seems to be some kind of personal vendetta against herself and her partner, Vignesh Shivan. She goes to say that Dhanush’s denial of allowing the footage of  “Naanum Rowdy Dhaan” was not professional or business, but emotional.

“It’s understandable if it’s business compulsions and monetary issues that mandate your denial; but hurts that this decision of yours is only to vent out your personal grudge against us,” she writes. The history between Nayanthara and Dhanush is not without its complexities. While “Naanum Rowdy Dhaan” went onto become the huge commercial and critical success that it did, tensions appear to have been simmering behind the scenes. Part of that is due to the producer in question-Dhanush.

Just a few days before “Naanum Rowdy Dhaan”, Nayanthara says that things were as unpleasant as they could get. “Dhanush was supremely hurt after the release of the film,” she says, with her pain seemingly brewing away since then. As Nayanthara aptly puts it, it has nearly been a decade since the release of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, and yet the animosity exists. This does not let go of both of them in their professional life. The tension left unresolved seems to be one of the ways through which the conflict hounds and complicates the documentary.

A Star Made of One’s Own Efforts: Nayanthara and Her Struggle in the Industry Throughout the letter, Nayanthara focuses on her being a self-made star and one who has been at the helm of the industry without industry connections or family ties. She makes a comparison to Dhanush, stating that he is supported by his father, a renowned actor and has at his side for support his brother, the accomplished director.

“A well-established actor like you, with the support and blessings of your father and your brother, needs to read and understand this,” Nayanthara writes. Her anger is only a symptom of much larger struggles she has faced in being a woman in this male-dominated film industry, where success hangs as a fine thread over one’s background and connections. Now, says Nayanthara, it’s only on the strength of sheer hard work and determination she rose to stardom, not some pleasure to be part of some film dynasty. She hopes that Dhanush, too, with his considerable influence, would understand the fight of a person like her who had to fight tooth and nail for every bit of opportunity. Call for Reconciliation and CompassionYet in the bitterness of the words she writes, Nayanthara ends by begging for reconciliation. She hopes Dhanush can find peace with his past-and even the success of others, including hers. “The world is a big place, it’s meant for everybody,” she writes.

“It’s all right that people you know come up in life. It’s all right that normal people with no background in cinema come from nowhere to big success. It’s all right if people connect and enjoy their lives.” Nayanthara, therefore, seems to hammer home the idea that the success of one person does not mean loss in the winnings of the other and urges Dhanush to be more tolerant and sympathetic towards people within the industry.

The script also throws in a powerful final statement: introducing Dhanush to the German word “schadenfreude,” translating the pleasure derived from the misfortune of others. Nayanthara has it much easier: she wishes that Dhanush no longer harbors that bad emotion against her or anyone else. The Documentary about Nayanthara: A Glimpse into Her Life The documentary “Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale” will be as revealing as possible about the life of this actress who has continuously achieved feats in her professional life and also personal accomplishments. Directed by Amrith Krishnan, the documentary therefore features exclusive interviews, behind-the-scenes footage and personal stories that fans have rarely had the chance to see in Nayanthara.

There are also contributions of several well-wishers from the industry such as Rana Daggubati, Taapsee Pannu and Nagarjuna speaking to gain some insights about Nayanthara’s life and career.

She mentions her marriage to filmmaker Vignesh Shivan and their journey; of course, the most recent being the blessed with twin babies through surrogacy in 2022. As the fans wait eagerly for the documentary, Nayanthara says that it will surely make people connect more meaningfully than only that face on the screen.

The Ongoing Feud: Future Hold?

A dispute in between Nayanthara and Dhanush: A reminder of the complexity of the film industry mixed with personal elements that are played out behind the scenes. Both of them have been highly successful, though their unfinished business makes this affair linger within their professional relationship. Their tiff will surely hit the news once Nayanthara’s documentary hits the Netflix screens. Whether the two reconcile or not, Nayanthara’s open letter is a powerful testimony to the troubles she has endured, personal sacrifices, and commitment to telling her own story in her voice. This also reflects the greater issues of taking ego and pride over the fact that filmmaking is a collective process.

In the end, it is Nayanthara’s tale of resilience, strength, and not allowing others to define what will make her successful. Fans are definitely going to be keeping an eye out for what this drama unravels like over the next coming months.
